Top 10 iPhone Jail Break Applications/Tweaks

There are thousands of great applications and tweaks that are available to the jailbroken iPhone user. Most people jailbreak because they want more customisation power over their phones. Some people jailbreak simply because they are fed up of the stock sms tones and want something different. Whatever the reason for your jailbreak, you’re bound tto have some favourite application and tweaks. Here’s the one’s that made jailbreaking worth it for me.

Cydia: Obviously. This application is basically an alternative community-powered App Store. I also use Rock, but mainly for their app backup facility.
SBSettings: This is my “can’t live without” app. Adds a bunch of configuration option such as hiding icons, toggling WiFi/SSH/Bluetooth and more. There are also a bunch of plugins for it. Just the ability to hide the annoying Stocks, Compass, Voice Memos and other icons I never use is really refreshing.
WinterBoard: This application allows you to customize pretty much everything you might want to customize on your iPhone. The interesting thing about it is that as a bonus to the default options, you can install plugins that are available for it in Cydia – and there are a lot of them. Themes for the LockScreen, SMS, Applications, SpringBoard, Keyboard, Sounds and much more.
Remove BG: To be used in conjunction with SBSettings. Remove all apps from the task switcher with one key press.
MakeItMine: Allows you to customize the carrier name that appears in the status bar (at the top) as well as the banner (the clock).
LockInfo (or Element): For those of you coming from the Windows Mobile world, you probably miss the “Today” screen that lists your calls, appointments and messages. Luckily, thanks to LockInfo or Element, you can have these back, on your lock screen or SpringBoard. I’ve been using LockInfo for months myself and can’t imagine my iPhone without it anymore. On the other hand, there’s been a lot of buzz about Element for quite some time now, and it’s just been released in the Cydia store. (BTW, LockInfo is a paid application and Element is currently free.)
Installous: One of the basic requirement of all the three ‘i products, the Installous application allows you to install a wide range of applications on the iPhone OS, including those which are no longer available with the official iPhone App Store.
Infinifolders: this gives you an infinite number apps, and adds vertical scrolling to browse through your folders. This is great if you have a bunch of folders for one specific category; you can now consolidate them into one big folder. It works seamlessly and feels like a native part of iOS 4
Infiniboard: lets you scroll through your springboard icons vertically as opposed to the default which is horizontally
NoSpot: Removes spotlight from your iPhone and helps you solve the lag issues and also make it run smoother and load up quicker. Also saves battery power.

After downloading the required firmware, you can shift-click (on PC) or option-click (on Mac) the Restore or Update Buttons in iTunes. Don’t forget, if you are downgrading, you need to have saved your SHSH blobs with Cydia.

Your browser may change the .ipsw file into a .zip file. In that case, just rename it to .ipsw and iTunes will accept it.

So, panic over, my iPhone arrived 4 days early and in excellent condition. Since it arrived with iOS 4.0.2, I am unable to jailbreak it therefore, I’ve had to be content with customising where I can. I have been trawling the web and have discovered some great wallpapers, I thought I’d share a few of my favourites.

The waiting game – iPhone 4

On 30th July 2010, the Vodafone launch of the iPhone into New Zealand failed spectacularly. There’s lots of speculation and rumours on the internet and I’m not going to re-hash them here, suffice to say, I didn’t get my phone on launch day.

I ended up ordering my iPhone 4 direct from Apple’s website on the evening of 30th July. A 3 week lead time seemed like an age away, but it’s actually come round pretty quickly and what do you know, this morning I got a shipping confirmation email.

So I’m keeping an eye on it, but it doesn’t seem to have gone very far, fingers crossed it arrives a little earlier than 27 August.

Lord only knows where Addington is, just hope the courier knows where my house is God speed.

Your Wish is a wedding planning service, the client required the site to be easy to update, with a blog, forum and FAQ’s integrated into the main site. The client wanted a bright theme, that was able to hold lots of information. It was set up as a website with a blog and forum attached. The three images at the top right of the page rotated with 6 other pictures individually.

The remit for this site was minimal, the client wanted the site to resemble another design they’d previously had. She had definite ideas on what she wanted and didn’t want. The thumbnails in the galleries had to be much larger than usual and the pictures had to be almost full screen. This design is customised from the default Twenty Ten design.

The main reason for the new site was that the previous site wasn’t showing up at all in google searches. Using WordPress and Search Engine Optimisation, the website is now showing within the top 5 on google.
